Most students treat Class 10 Science as three separate subjects. Physics to be afraid of, Chemistry to be memorised, Biology to be written out at length.
That way of thinking costs marks, because it hides where the marks actually are.
A small part of the syllabus, a big part of the paper
In the CBSE Class 10 Science paper, the numerical questions sit in a few chapters. Electricity. Light, reflection and refraction. Some balancing and calculation work in Chemical Reactions.
These are exactly the questions students skip during revision, because you cannot revise them by reading. Reading the mirror formula ten times will not help you apply it in the exam hall with the clock running.
The three mistakes we see every single year
Signs in Light. More marks are lost to plus and minus than to the actual concept. A student can understand refraction perfectly and still get a zero because the object distance was written as positive. The fix is boring and it works: one fixed sign convention, written at the top of the rough work, every time, until it stops being a decision.
Series or parallel in Electricity. Students learn both formulas and then cannot tell which one the circuit in front of them needs. The problem is not the formula. It is reading the circuit diagram. We spend real class time on redrawing a messy diagram into a clean one before any calculation starts.
Units dropped halfway. Every step correct, and the final answer is a bare number with no unit. One mark gone. It happens every year, in every batch, and it is the easiest mark on the whole paper to get back.
Why we teach Maths and Science together
We take Science for Class 6 to 10 and Maths for Class 6 to 12, in the same room, with the same teacher. That is not just a timetable convenience.
A Class 10 student who is weak at rearranging equations will struggle with the mirror formula. Not because they do not understand mirrors. Because 1/v + 1/u = 1/f is an algebra problem wearing a physics uniform.
When one teacher sees both subjects, that gets spotted once and fixed in the subject where it really lives. Families who arrange maths at one place and science at another rarely get that, because each teacher only sees half the picture.
What good preparation looks like
Not more chapters. The same chapters, done differently.
- Numericals worked on paper, with a timer, sign convention written first
- Circuit diagrams redrawn neatly before solving
- Previous years’ board questions instead of textbook questions, because the wording is different and the wording is half the difficulty
- Every answer finished with its unit, until nobody has to remind them
Our Class 10 students scored 95, 91, 89, 87, 84 and 82 in Science in 2024. In 2025, five students scored 95, 95, 90, 89 and 87 in Science. In 2026, Divyansh got 93 and Shivangi got 92.
There is no trick in it. The numericals were treated as a skill to practise rather than a topic to read.
